Think in ecosystem terms - Donor Surveys
The more you know about your donors, the easier it is to recruit new donors, upgrade existing donors, build loyalty, and retain your current supporters.
What magazines do your supporters read? |
| What other organisations do your supporters donate to? |
Organisations have high attrition rates because they are often recruiting the wrong people and then failing in the very hard task of absorbing those people into the the organisation culture. But absorbing people who are not naturally attuned to your issue or your organisation will always be hard. Perhaps it is not possible.

Alternatively admitting that your organisation appeals to a segment of the population and not the whole population, and taking the time to locate that segment is hard work, and is often avoided. This service encourages you to consider the alternatives to scooping new supporters without differentiation from the general population, while acknowledging that scooping works on some levels, but carries real on-going costs.

What age are they? |
The more you know about your existing supporters, the easier it is for you to find people like them but also the better you can ask for support from existing supporters in a compelling way. We can’t emphasise enough how important a “feel” for your supporters is, at all stages of the fundraising cycle.
A key message is to think in ecosystem terms. You want a variety of strategies operating to recruit, retain and upgrade your donors. A diverse system can withstand shocks or downturns, a simple one strategy system will not. Your computer system, your technology can make a diverse, complex and resilient system possible and sustainable.
